Many construction puzzles are
designed so the pieces border with the surface. The wooden knot is one of
the diagonal burrs. The pieces of these puzzles verge on the edges in stead of
the surfaces. The notches of the diagonal burrs are also slanted. The diagram
below shows how the notches can be made.
if you view the edge of a
square beam you can see that angle a is 45°.The length of x
is equal to the square root of 2 times length of y. The easiest way to make the
pieces is to use a mitre box and to saw under an angle of 45° in relation to
the vertical surface. The wooden knot is the most common diagonal burr.
This puzzle is constructed out
of six identical pieces. All pieces have two slanted notches. The angle of the
notches is 45°
as described in the previous paragraph, and can be easily made with a saw and
mitre box.
To find the position of every
piece is not really the problem of this puzzle, but the difficult of this
game is much more to find out how the pieces must be connected to each other.
To solve this puzzle you should have four hands, but with some practice two will
be enough. First you must make two groups of three pieces. Those two groups can
be slide into each other. You can see this process shown in the figure below.
You can also make another
puzzle which looks exactly the same as the wooden knot described above. The
construction of this puzzle requires less dexterity. You can use the diagram
below for this puzzle. As you can see three pieces are the same as the pieces
used for the original wooden knot. Two pieces have three notches, and one piece,
the key piece, is solid. The pieces can be simply slide together in the same way
as a ordinary Chinese cross puzzle.
