The Cassiopeia
puzzle is derived form the rhombic
triacontahedron.
Because this solid can be piled up in
different ways. The Cassiopeia puzzle can be used as a base for other, beautiful
puzzles on the same way as the Betelgeuze and
Orion fractals are derived from the Orion puzzle. On this
page three different Cassiopeia Fractals are shown. I have never made these puzzles
in real. It will become clear why.
The first
Cassiopeia Fractal puzzle, Cassiopeia12, is made out of twelve normal Cassiopeia
puzzles. Every part borders to five others. In total one Cassiopeia puzzle has
60 pieces. Cassiopeia12 has 660 pieces. To make this puzzle you need endless
patience, but it is becoming even worse...
The Cassiopeia20
is made out of twenty Cassiopeia puzzles. Every part borders to three others. In
total this puzzle will contain 1140 pieces.
The largest
puzzle on this page, the Cassiopeia30 is made out of 1680!! pieces. Making and
constructing this puzzle will be a very time consuming job. Maybe a good idea
after retirement and you really don't know what to do.
A short
calculation about this last puzzle. If you use for making this puzzle pine wood
of 1,8 cm, the pieces will become 17 cm long. In total you need more than 300
meter of wood, so that would be several trees. If you take a price of € 1,-
per meter, this puzzle will cost € 300,-. If you want to make this puzzle with
handwork, you can make 3 to 4 pieces per hour. To make 1680 pieces it will take
14 working weeks. The puzzle will have a diameter of 1,5 meter.
You can make even
larger Cassiopeia puzzles. The Cassioppeia30 puzzle can be duplicated 30 times to a
Cassiopeia900 of 50280 pieces. I don't think somebody will ever make this
puzzle... (€ 9000,- , 8 years of work and a diameter of 6 meters)
